L'AMX-30 B2 est un char de combat français qui fait suite à la famille des AMX-30 instigué dès la fin des années 50. La version B2 quand à elle a été officiellement mis en service en 1982. Ce char à été construit de deux façons : soit directement neuf sorti en usine, soit rétrofité sur la base de versions précédentes. En effet sur ces formes générales, peu de choses changent extérieurement. cependant dans le détail, nombre de pièces apparaissent ou disparaissent des versions précédentes.
Le moteur également subi des changements avec désormais un polycarburant HS 110.2 turbo-compressé de 12 cylindres donnant 680 ch à 2400 tr/mn et une boîte de mécanisme semi-automatique ENC 200 Minerva à convertisseur de couple avec commandes électro hydrauliques et direction hydrostatique.
Ce char étant un engin comparable aux M-48/M-60 Patton Américain ou encore au Léopard Allemand, c'est donc naturellement que le CENTAC s'en dota.

Les AMX-30 B2 de la FORAD (acronyme pour "FORse ADverse") ont toutefois des particularités notables comparés aux AMX-30 B2 classiques.
En effet, devant jouer des rôles d'"ennemis" ces engins sont souvent maquillés avec des accessoires.
Pour les plus notables citons les bidons à l'arrière (comme sur certains chars soviétiques) un faux Snorkel derrière la tourelle, un faux extracteur de fumée sur le canon, La TVBNL a été entourée de tôle pour simuler le phare IR des T-72, un ingénieux marche pied a été ajouté sur le devant du char permettant de monter dessus plus facilement et plus rapidement, ......
A l'encontre, d'autres choses ont été enlevés comme le coffre de nuque de tourelle et du coffre NBC qui va avec. Le téléphone de troupe ou encore l'ANF1 de tourelle ont également été enlevés entre autres choses.

Un des autres ajouts majeurs sur ces chars est bien sur le système de simulation des feux et de recueil de données : grâce à des simulateurs de tir laser basse intensité et au système informatique CENTAURE, tous les feux sont simulés et sanctionnés.
La couleur de ces engins était au début identique aux autres chars français (trois tons OTAN)
Puis un premier bariolage a été mis dessus avec différentes couleurs afin de le différencier plus facilement (il avait alors des taches noir, blanc, marron et vert très vif)
Puis le camouflage FORAD à finalement été standardisé d'abord en 4 couleurs : "gris, bleu, noir et gris/bleu" puis ensuite par facilité tout les engins ont fini par être bariolé en bleu-gris et en noir OTAN.
Les bandes étant peintes approximativement aléatoirement. certaines similitudes sont observables, mais cependant rien de comparable avec les couleurs de l'armée en 3 tons qui sont eux soumis a de strictes schémas de formes et de couleurs.

The AMX-30B2 is a French battle tank which followed the AMX-30B into service in the 1980s. The AMX-30B upon which the AMX-30B2 was based began development in the late 1950s. The first AMX-30B2 batches entered service in 1982. AMX-30B2s were procured newly built from 1982-1985 and thereafter on the basis of upgrading existing AMX-30B battle tanks. In general form, the family resemblance remains, despite numerous detail changes from the AMX-30B. Many detail changes were made throughout the AMX-30B2 program, which was conducted over nearly a decade by GIAT at the Atelier de Roanne. Modern electronics in particular were a boon for the new generation AMX-30B2 battle tank. Thus, the optical coincidence rangefinder and gunner's telescopic sight of the AMX-30B gave way to a laser rangefinder and the computerized COTAC fire control system (as well as the DIVT-13 low light camera system). These proven systems were already successfully proven on the GIAT AMX-10RC. Later versions of the AMX-30B2 mounted the DIVT-16 Castor thermal gunnery camera made by Thomson-TRT (Thales) installed on the right side of the mantlet. The DIVT-16 permits target detection at over 5,000 meters and target identification between 1000 and 3000 meters. On the left side of the mantlet the white light projector was retained in form of the PH-8B previously used as an infrared projector.
The engine also underwent changes. The Hispano Suiza HS110 engine was replaced with a turbocharged version giving 680 hp at 2400 rpm and ENC 200 Minerva semi-automatic transmission with electrohydraulic controls and hydrostatic steering. The AMX-30B2 was comparable to the American M-60A3 Patton or the German Leopard 1A5, so it's natural that CENTAC keeps them as useful OPFOR equipment.

The AMX-30B2s operated by the FORAD (FORAD is the acronym for "Force Adverse", translating literally to OPFOR) have significant particularities compared to the conventional AMX-30B2. Indeed, to play the roles of "enemy" these vehicles have been extensively disguised with accessories. The most notable additions include the fuel drums fitted to the rear of the tank (like on some Soviet tanks), a false shnorkel behind the turret, a fake fume extractor on the barrel, the CASTOR camera surrounded by sheet metal to simulate the IR projector seen on some Soviet tanks. An ingenious addition is the foot sling added to the front of the hull to ease mounting up for the crew...
In contrast, other parts were removed, such as the NBC box fitted to the turret bustle. The infantry phone box and the ANF1 cupola machinegun were also removed among other things. One of the other major addition to the tanks is on the combat simulation system, which includes amber flashers and laser detection sensors and the CENTAURE computer system. All hits are registered by the system and are recorded. The original colour of these vehicles when the FORAD was formed was identical to that carried on other contemporary French tanks (three tone NATO pattern), but this was followed by the adoption of other camouflage patterns (including a 4-tone scheme based on gray, blue gray, black and green). The FORAD standardised on blue-gray background and NATO black stripes to standardize the pattern. The black stripes are painted randomly, similarities are observable, but still nothing like the precise pattern of the French standard 3-tone camouflage patterns.
